Duffy, 35, who had big hits with 2008’s “Mercy” single and her debut album “Rockferry,” wrote in a post on Instagram that she was “fine and safe now” but said she had taken her time to heal from the suffering.
The Welsh soul singer won a 2009 Grammy for “Rockferry” and three Brit Awards but largely disassociated herself with the release of her second, less successful album in 2010. She performed in an Edith Piaf tribute concert in New York in 2013 and took the role of a small film in the 2015 British crime film “Legend” but has rarely been heard or heard since.
“Many of you wonder what happened to me, where I disappeared and why,” he wrote. “The truth is, and please trust me that I am fine and safe now, I was raped and drugged and confined over a few days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time.”
He did not say who had detained him or when but said he would post an audio interview in the coming weeks where he would answer any questions.
“You wonder why I didn’t choose to use my voice to express my pain? I didn’t want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if is it broken? And slow and steady, “he added.
Duffy’s representatives from 2010 did not return a request for comment Tuesday on the posting.
